Name: My full name is Angeline Bernier… super exotic sounding, right?! Not many people know how to pronounce my last name correctly. Ah, the joys of having French ancestors.
Nickname: You can just call me Angie. My stage name is Angie B. Simple, easy to pronounce, and has a sort of spunky funky vibe that my music exudes.
Where do you live? I’m born and raised in Las Vegas. I’ve lived in many different places, but this is pretty much home to me.
How do you identify? Firstlly, human. Secondly, a music enthusiast. But if we’re talking sexual preferences, I am a raging lady loving lesbian.. Bordering on gender-fluid. I’m a bit complex..
What has been your biggest struggle? Wow, that is tough… I have battled drug addiction, homelessness, mental illness, self-harm, sexual abuse, and losing my father, the only parent who was active in my life and sole provider, to an overdose. Being transparent about what I have overcome and still battle hasn’t always been easy, but it is important to me, because it may give others the courage to speak out and feel that freedom of baring your soul. Sometimes just knowing someone else gets it… who understands… is enough.
What do you consider your greatest achievement? I would have to say that above all else, it’s when I receive messages that I have inspired someone to get clean, that my music helped them through a dark time.. That my transparency about my mental health issues, helped someone from taking their life. That brought me to tears. As a person who has lived most of their life dealing with self-hatred, self-doubt, insecurity and body image issues, the most important thing to me is helping to spare someone that unimaginable pain.
What would you say to someone considering coming out of the closet? If I could, I would hold every person’s hand while they come out… a parent’s love should be unconditional. I would tell them to speak their truth, and be set free. I never dealt with being shamed by my family, but I have been a victim of homophobia. Two boys on the school bus threw big rocks at my head and calling me a dyke.. And it was a terrible feeling. So, I started hiding in the closet pretending to be at school, ditching, whatever I had to do to avoid being subjected to that again.
What are your hobbies? My hobbies are all related to music. Producing, recording, playing guitar, piano, drums, bongo.. I was a first chair flutist in band. And then moved on to Choir. My father instilled a love and passion for music in me that will live on as his legacy.
What color of the rainbow are you? Why can’t I be all of them?? Well, if I have to choose, I would pick red. Red is sexy and seductive. TLC didn’t name the song “Red Light Special” for nothing! Lol.
What is your favorite TV show or movie? I’m a total sap. I love romance movies. My favorite is “A Walk To Remember.” Someday, I’m going to name a star after someone. Gahhh.. I love love.
Who is your favorite superhero? Anyone who has been broken, shattered and utterly defeated, and came out of the pain and loss… found their strength and made the choice to overcome…. is a superhero to me. Right now, I’d say Mandy Harvey, deaf singer, motivational speaker, and contestant on America’s Got Talent, is my superhero.
Do you own a business? No, but I have this dream of starting an LGBT record label one day.
What is your relationship status? Oh, I’m definitely off the market. Pretty sure I have found something with this woman that many people yearn for. She knows my flaws and she accepts them. And I accept her for all that she is. The connection we have is one I only dreamed of ever having. I could write a page on her alone, so I’ll stop there lol.
What have you learned about yourself since you came out? I have learned that, although yes I am a lesbian, that is NOT all I am. Being proud of who you are is so so very important, it is a journey I’m still on. One thing that I really can’t stand, is when men make advances on me, and when I clearly reject them and tell them I’m gay, they persist even more or ask what I do with my girl in bed. Like, excuse me!? We eat pizza and sleep as far as you’re concerned. Mind your business. Ugh.
What have you learned about yourself since your transformation? My transformation is still in progress. It has taken me a long time to feel comfortable in my skin, to go after my dreams due to fear and rejection. When I first started putting out my music on YouTube, my intentions were very different. I wanted to get discovered. I wanted the fame, or at least the “idea” of it. I wanted to be loved and adored by everyone. But now, I make music because 1.) it heals me…. just hearing the sweet sound of strumming the G chord.. It’s like medicine… I do it because I love to put out positive energy into the world as much as I can… and I am so very grateful to have such supportive listeners and followers. They keep me going.
What are your pet peeves? Small talk (it bores me) … when people I’m in the car with someone and they have their car stereo volume on low for no reason.. Those people do not even deserve a car stereo. (kidding) People, who I am showing my favorite, life changing mind blowing song to, and talk through it! Unnecessarily and extremely rude and confrontational people. There is a way to approach people without being hurtful… The words we speak leave a long lasting impression.
What is your favorite thing about you? My ability to listen and be someone people feel comfortable talking to.
Who has been the most influential person in your life? My dad was the person who was the biggest part of my life and has the biggest piece of my heart. His willpower.. His love for me. He took me in as a single father, and gave up his cocaine addiction and worked so very hard to support us both. I truly believe being brought up by him saved my life.
What advice would you give to your LGBT family? Just be you. Don’t worry so much about fitting into categories and labels. (studs, stems, butch, femmes..) but if you like that, then by all means, just be you. I don’t personally like to stick to labels because I feel I don’t totally fit any of them. I dress masculine because it makes me feel confident. But I also have feminine traits. I love chick flicks, romantic movies, and don’t care about sports much. Lol.
What is your biggest strength? My humility.
What is your biggest weakness? Self-doubt
Do you have pets? No, but have had roommates with fur babies. I love animals!!
What is your favorite book? The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
Do you have any phobias? Oh yes…. being in an enclosed space, surrounded by people. Elevators, Grocery Stores… but with concerts I’m cool.
Who was your first crush? This girl in my freshman year P.E. class. She gave me a Valentine’s Day card and kissed me in the locker room. I was like, “woahhhhh what is THIS feeling? Oh damn, I’m gay! Sweet, so when can we make out again? Never felt that fluttery feeling kissing boys. Mostly just a bit of nausea and boredom.” Haha.
What is your happiest memory? Driving to the beach almost every year with my dad and listening to our favorite music.
If you had 24 hrs to live, what would you do? I would want to go to every elementary, middle and high school I could and tell them that do not give up on yourself. Do not give up the fight. Because it will be worth it. I would tell them of what I have overcome and been through in my life and tell them to find their passion… and build it. Practice. Do not let anyone take away that passion. Do not listen to their words. Don’t let them win. Stick at it. Push on and no matter what, just keep pursuing your passion. Keep creating. It is our choice how we make our mark on the world. Life is about so much more than fame and material possessions…. Life is about helping others. In whatever way. Just a nice compliment can make someone’s whole day. And when you find your passion… your gift…. use it… as just that. A GIFT. Use it to help others.
